Foot and Ankle MRI Scan

A Foot and Ankle MRI is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the soft tissues, bones, and joints in the foot and ankle. It is often used to evaluate injuries, chronic pain, or abnormalities that are not easily detectable through other imaging methods like X-rays or CT scans.

Why is it Performed?

Doctors may order a foot and ankle MRI for the following reasons:

  • Sports Injuries: Assess ligament tears, tendon injuries, and muscle strains.
  • Bone Fractures: Identify fractures that are difficult to see on X-rays.
  • Arthritis: Evaluate the extent of joint damage.
  • Infections: Detect soft tissue or bone infections such as osteomyelitis.
  • Tumours: Diagnose and assess masses or lumps for malignancy.
  • Post-Surgical Evaluation: Monitor recovery and persistent pain after surgery

What are the benefits?

  • High-Resolution Imaging: Provides superior detail, particularly of soft tissues like ligaments, tendons, and cartilage.
  • No Radiation: Safer than X-rays or CT scans as it does not use ionizing radiation.
  • Comprehensive Diagnosis: Simultaneously evaluates multiple structures such as muscles, bones, and soft tissues.
  • Early Detection: Helps identify conditions like infections or tumours at an early stage.

What are the limitations?

  • Metal Artifacts: Metal implants or foreign objects can distort images.
  • Movement Sensitivity: Patient movement during the scan can degrade image quality.
  • Cost and Accessibility: MRIs are often more expensive and may not be as readily available as other imaging techniques.
  • Time-Consuming: Scans can take 30–45 minutes, longer than most other imaging methods

How to Book a Scan

I don't have a referral letter

No referral? No problem. Fill in our short self-referral form and one of our partner private GPs will review your request, refer you for the right scan and prepare the scan instructions. The imaging centre will then call you to arrange your appointment. After your scan, the report is sent to the GP, who will share the results with you. This service is provided by Dr Online Ltd.

I have a referral letter

If you've been referred by a GP, consultant, physiotherapist or osteopath, simply upload your referral letter along with their contact details.
