Hand MRI Scan

A hand MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a non-invasive imaging technique used to visualize the internal structures of the hand, including bones, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, and soft tissues. This technology employs a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed cross-sectional images that can aid in diagnosing a variety of hand conditions.

Why is it Performed?

Hand MRI is typically used to diagnose conditions related to joint problems, injuries, and soft tissue abnormalities. It can help assess conditions such as:

  • Fractures: MRI can detect bone fractures or soft tissue injuries that may not be visible on X-rays.
  • Arthritis: Conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, which affect the joints and surrounding soft tissues, can be assessed more accurately with MRI.
  • Tendon and Ligament Injuries: MRI helps visualize injuries to tendons and ligaments, such as tears or inflammation.
  • Nerve Issues: It can be used to evaluate conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, where nerves in the wrist are compressed.
  • Cysts or Tumors: MRI is effective in detecting cysts, tumours, or other abnormalities in the soft tissues of the hand.

What are the benefits?

  • Detailed and Accurate Imaging: Hand MRI provides high-resolution images, making it an excellent tool for detecting subtle injuries or conditions that may be missed with X-rays.
  • Non-Invasive: Unlike some other diagnostic procedures, MRI does not require surgery or the use of ionizing radiation.
  • Comprehensive Views: It offers multi-dimensional views, allowing doctors to get a complete picture of the hand’s condition from different angles.

What are the limitations?

  • Cost and Availability: Hand MRIs may not be as widely available or affordable as X-rays or other imaging tests.
  • Duration: The procedure typically takes 20-40 minutes, which may be uncomfortable for patients who experience claustrophobia or have difficulty remaining still.
  • Contrast Risk: In some cases, an intravenous contrast agent is used to enhance the images, which can pose a risk for individuals with allergies or kidney issues.
  • Soft Tissue Focus: While MRI is excellent for visualizing soft tissues, it may not always provide additional information beyond what other imaging methods like X-rays or ultrasound offer for bone fractures.

How to Book a Scan

I don't have a referral letter

No referral? No problem. Fill in our short self-referral form and one of our partner private GPs will review your request, refer you for the right scan and prepare the scan instructions. The imaging centre will then call you to arrange your appointment. After your scan, the report is sent to the GP, who will share the results with you. This service is provided by Dr Online Ltd.

I have a referral letter

If you've been referred by a GP, consultant, physiotherapist or osteopath, simply upload your referral letter along with their contact details. We'll send it to your nearest or preferred imaging centre, and their team will call you to book a time that suits you. After your scan, the report is sent to the clinician who referred you. Your clinician can also send the referral to us directly.
