Lumbar Spine MRI Scan

A lumbar spine MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed images of the lower spine. It is a non-invasive test that provides high-resolution pictures of the bones, soft tissues, spinal cord, and nerves in the lumbar (lower back) region.

Why is it Performed?

A lumbar spine MRI is used to diagnose various conditions, including:

  • Persistent lower back pain or leg pain.
  • Herniated discs.
  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal).
  • Tumours, infections, or inflammation in the lumbar region.
  • Injuries or trauma to the lower spine.
  • Nerve compression causing numbness, tingling, or weakness in the legs.
  • Congenital spinal defects.
  • Conditions like multiple sclerosis or osteoporosis.

The test helps in planning treatments like surgery, physical therapy, or other interventions

What are the benefits?

  • Non-invasive and radiation-free: Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRIs do not use radiation, making them safer for repeated use.
  • High-resolution images: Provides detailed images of bones, discs, nerves, and soft tissues, aiding in precise diagnosis.
  • Versatile diagnostics: Can detect subtle abnormalities like nerve root compression, inflammation, or tumours that may not be visible in other imaging techniques.
  • Customizable imaging: Contrast-enhanced MRIs can highlight specific areas, improving diagnostic accuracy

What are the limitations?

  • Limited access for metal implants: Some patients with pacemakers or metal implants may not be eligible for an MRI.
  • Cost and availability: MRI scans are more expensive and may not be readily available in some locations.
  • Lengthy procedure: Scans typically last 30–60 minutes, during which the patient must remain still.
  • Motion sensitivity: Any movement during the scan can blur images, requiring retakes.
  • Not ideal for bone details: While effective for soft tissue imaging, CT scans may be better for visualizing fine bone details

How to Book a Scan

I don't have a referral letter

No referral? No problem. Fill in our short self-referral form and one of our partner private GPs will review your request, refer you for the right scan and prepare the scan instructions. The imaging centre will then call you to arrange your appointment. After your scan, the report is sent to the GP, who will share the results with you. This service is provided by Dr Online Ltd.

I have a referral letter

If you've been referred by a GP, consultant, physiotherapist or osteopath, simply upload your referral letter along with their contact details. We'll send it to your nearest or preferred imaging centre, and their team will call you to book a time that suits you. After your scan, the report is sent to the clinician who referred you. Your clinician can also send the referral to us directly.
