Thoracic Spine MRI Scan

A thoracic spine MRI is a type of imaging test that provides detailed pictures of the thoracic region of the spine, which includes the 12 vertebrae in the mid-back (T1-T12), the surrounding muscles, ligaments, discs, and spinal cord. The test is non-invasive and uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images without the need for radiation

Why is it Performed?

Thoracic spine MRIs are often ordered to investigate issues related to back pain, stiffness, and neurological symptoms, especially when these symptoms persist despite conservative treatments. It’s also used to evaluate conditions such as:

  • Herniated or bulging discs
  • Spinal cord injuries or tumours
  • Inflammatory conditions like spinal infections or autoimmune diseases
  • Spinal deformities, such as kyphosis (excessive curvature).

What are the benefits?

  • Non-invasive: Unlike other imaging techniques like CT scans, MRIs do not use ionizing radiation.
  • Detailed imaging: MRI can visualize soft tissues (discs, muscles, nerves) with high precision, helping to diagnose conditions like disc herniation, nerve compression, or spinal cord issues.
  • Safe for most people: For most patients, MRI is a safe procedure with no known long-term risks.
  • No radiation: This makes MRIs safer for repeated imaging, which is beneficial for monitoring ongoing conditions

What are the limitations?

  • Not suitable for everyone: As mentioned, patients with certain metal implants or devices may not be eligible for an MRI.
  • Claustrophobia: Some individuals may feel uncomfortable due to the narrow, enclosed space of the machine.
  • Limited by movement: MRI requires the patient to stay very still during the procedure. Any movement can blur the images, leading to inaccurate results
