Shoulder MRI Scan

A shoulder MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a medical imaging technique used to visualize the internal structures of the shoulder, including muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bones. It utilizes strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images without using ionizing radiation (unlike X-rays or CT scans).

Why is it Performed?

A shoulder MRI is typically recommended when a patient experiences unexplained shoulder pain, weakness, or limited range of motion. It helps diagnose conditions such as rotator cuff tears, ligament injuries, cartilage damage, bone fractures, infections, or tumours. The MRI can also evaluate chronic shoulder conditions like arthritis or impingement syndrome.

What are the benefits?

  • Detailed Imaging: MRI offers highly detailed images of soft tissues, which X-rays and CT scans may miss, making it ideal for diagnosing soft tissue injuries and conditions.
  • Non-invasive: It is a non-invasive procedure that does not involve surgery, radiation, or physical penetration, making it safer than some alternative methods.
  • Precision in Diagnosis: MRIs can detect subtle changes in tissues, such as ligament tears, inflammation, or cartilage defects, which are crucial for forming an accurate treatment plan.

What are the limitations?

  • Accessibility: Not all facilities have MRI machines, and the procedure can be costly.
  • Time: The scan can take up to 60 minutes or more, which may be difficult for some patients.
  • Interpretation: Although highly accurate, MRI results need to be interpreted by skilled radiologists. In some cases, subtle abnormalities may be missed.
  • Magnetic Interference: The procedure is unsuitable for patients with certain metallic implants or devices in their bodies.
